Should I get my Fender bass setup?

Hi

so brief bit of history - played a bit of bass on a cheap fender copy, fell in love and bought a fender player plus active jazz bass about a year ago. It’s a fabulous bit of kit, I’ve played regularly since I got it and it plays lovely, just wondering if it could do with a setup? Or if I’m happy with it should just leave it? Thanks in advance!

I'm kinda bad about waiting too long in between setups, but I usually get 1 or 2 a year on my main basses just to keep everything the way I like it. Recently I took my main bass in because it needed a new nut, and after getting it back I was blown away by how bad it had been before. I knew the nut was gonna need replacing, but because of how low it had gotten, the first three frets on my bass were ruined. Not to mention the action/string radius had gotten all out of wack. As soon as I picked it up at my guy's shop, it was like playing a new instrument. The foam under the pickups had also gone bad, so the pole pieces had actually sunk down into the foam and the whole pickup had sagged down slightly. So not only did it play better, it sounded better when I got it back.

Just food for thought.

Usually it's obvious when it's necessary to do a setup. You can always measure and see if you're in the ballpark.

You could learn how to do it yourself. Plenty of how-to videos on YouTube. It’s not difficult and it’s a good skill to have.

It's worth getting it setup at least once by a good pro. So many players who came to me had no idea that their bass could play so much better than they were used to. You won't know until you try it.

Learn how you like it s d then learn to do it yourself. Not difficult. Simple tools needed.

Thank you all!! Think I might give it a manual check but not too stressed as it’s playing lovely at the moment and when the time comes either have a go myself or pop it in for a setup!!
