Here is a pic of my new Yamaha rig. I just go the cabs a couple of weeks ago.

This rig is loud and very versatile sounding because of the Yamaha head. The cabs also seem very well matched to the head also and produce a good amount of low end.

The Ashdown is my starting point and where all the EQ is done. This is my main gigging amp. But occasionally I need to play outside or at a really big hall - then I add in as you guessed a poweramp. I take the post EQ DI out from the Ashdown and feed it into the poweramp via a Yamaha 10/2 mixer. The amp is a Thomann Proline 1300 run in stereo mode at 450 watts per channel. The Ashdown is about 280 watts - it's the older Britsh made ones. Each cab is 8 ohm. I can also use one of these cabs as an extension ot the Ashdown - at 8 ohms it's the right resistance. The amp can also be bridged and then it's 1300 watts mono - now that could cause me a problem; if I wanted to use it at that wattage - the cabs have passive crossovers which wouldn't really handle much more than 500 watts. The Speakers are 400 watt Eminence Delta 15A and 50 watt mid horns from Eminence. Eminence crossovers are set at 3.5kh. The cabs are also Eminence designs from the 80's when they used to supply a book of designs. I settled on this one because it's big enough to be quite efficient (I was surprised at how inefficient cabs get when you reduce the size to what we'd see as normal amongst manufacturers - on the other hand I think these would be too big for most people to buy - and they weigh 75 pounds - they are mode of particle board and 2x2 braces - they'd weigh a load more made of ply or MDF!!). The power amp and speakers is more PA oriented than poure bass as I needed to have that capability - but it's such a loud rig it can handle a lot of bass before clipping or distorting. It's the first time one of our bands has been able to put everything, including drum and bass, thorugh the PA. We continue to use the Makie 450's but they couldn't handle kick bass and bass guitar. If I'd just wanted these for bass I'd have used an Eminence speaker specifically designed for bass and I'd have had to go the biamp route to deliver more power to the cabinets or leave out the mid-horns.

All of this kit goes into my Punto, including the Laney 120 I use as vocal fold-back - but no room for passengers.

I haven't named her yet, but her initials are S.V.P. :D

Has the stock tubes in it now (a bit noisy) but a set of JJ's are on the way. We'll start there and see how things pan out. The SVP lined into the effect return of the Mpulse is out of this world. Tone sammich! :bassist:

You run a tube preamp into the effects loop of an amp with a tube preamp???

What does the Ampeg do that the front end of the Mesa cannot?

Yes, you are a bit confused. I run the Ampeg into the effect RETURN of the Mesa, not in the loop. A toe tap on the Mesa effect loop footswitch and I A/B between the Mesa and the SVP Pro. Further simplified:

Effect loop off + bass in Mesa input = Mesa Mpulse 600
Effect loop on + bass in SVP input = SVP into Mesa 600 watt power amp.

Two rigs in one rack, each with its own character.

I initially bought the SVP for a backup, and I'll keep another power amp in the car just in case, but this setup gives me lots of options in one 4 space rack. I suppose I'll add an A/B switch for inputs sooner or later.

What sounds do you get out of each one? Is it like a clean/dirty setup? Or do you use different basses with each pre? Just curious

Well this setup is only a week old, I had been flying with only the Mesa for awhile and wanted to have some sort of backup again. I originally intended to pair the SVP with a power amp in another rack, but after buying it and realizing what it had to offer in terms of really nice grind, I thought I may as well be using it, so in the empty rack space it went. I guess you could equate it to a nice 2 channel rig, the Mesa offering clean tube power, and the Ampeg offering warm tube grind.

I really like the drive control on the SVP alot. The musical warmth it adds is so sweet - I hate to call it distortion. In contrast, I find the gain control on the Mesa must be used much more sparingly for my taste, and rarely take it past the 1 o'clock position. Its just a different ball of wax.

I absolutely LOVE both of these units. My only concern right now is quieting the SVP down a little.
