Would you guys believe that this is my big brother?

And here's me for comparison!

It's true. I'm 30, 250lbs, 6'...and he's 33, 140lbs, 5'9" (and like 6% body fat!). He's a machine though...he rides 5-6days a week, and has been competing since probably 96 or 97. Coincidentally, he was rated by Triathlete Magazine as one of the top 5 bike-fitters in the nation. So if you need a bike fit by one of the best, shoot him an email!

I never knew they had top rated fitters, but that's pretty cool. A lot of people and bike stores overlook the ideal fit. There's actually a local bike shop who tends to "fit" people to what's in stock. Good for sales, bad for the biker. You can often downgrade to a cheaper bike that fits and do much better than an ultra espensive bike that doesn't fit.

+1
Fit is everything. Forget all the hoopla about frame material and weight and "rotating mass" and "vertically compliant yet laterally stiff" yada-yada-yada... A bike that fits properly will allow you to perform better than any other equipment upgrade, period.

Ab-so-freakin'-lutely!! Especially if you're racing. Every bit of energy you expend battling a poor-fitting machine means you'll have that much less energy available for the critical moments that decide a race.

For real! I watched my bro fit a guy once, and it was incredible. The guy thought his form was perfect, but (as my bro showed him on the video he recorded the guy on), he was way out of whack...his hips were all over the place!

Heh, that's where I was about a week ago. I went out with the local Trek team and was a tad slower than their pro racers, which really sucked because the other group was a tad to slow for my usual cruising speeds. On the bright side, one of the riders noticed my hips didn't look right. I had been making tweaks over the years based on how I was feeling after rides. I was feeling fine but I've never actually seen myself on the bike.

So, I started from scratch and redid the fit. A few things feel slightly better and I seem a tad faster.

I think that's one of the reasons the whole industry of "professional bike fitters" came into existence: It's a lot easier for other people to see how your physiology operates when riding than it is for us to assess ourselves.

Some of the things that riders do "wrong" don't necessarily feel uncomfortable or lead to pain/fatigue during or after a ride, they simply prevent the rider from maximizing their efficiency.
