Mmmwah-ha-ha-haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH!!!
This whole thread has been like a trip down memory lane.
First, I was the newbie too self-concious about how badly I sucked that I couldn't even bring myself to play in a store.
Second, I was impressing myself and playing loud, but not well.
Next, I was an infamous wanker waiting to hear people say, "Wow you sound just like Jaco-the Flea-Claypool!"
And now, I know how good I have gotten so far. I don't need to show off. I woodshed at home. Like a whisper, good playing can cut through the noise; so I keep it down. I try out the gear which interests me and I leave. Sometimes I do get into an impromptu clinic. Sometimes other customers mistake me for a store employee and ask me questions. I inform them that I don't work there, but I do try to help them. I sometimes know more about the gear than the employees do and I'm not out to make a sale.
Perhaps we can judge others behavior and how it relates to their skill by this scale: Newbie, Self-Impressed, Wanker, Serious-Musician.
