I know that there are ways of finding what is going on with this, divide and conquer type stuff.
I have a couple of distortion pedals. The horrible distortion circuit in an MXR M-80, an ashdown bass drive plus and I've just gotten a Joyo Ultimate drive. Mostly I am using distortion as an always on effect.
At the beginning of my last rehearsal (before playing) I was trying to dial in a good distortion sound with the joyo. I had taken the ashdown out (seeing if the joyo would replace it) and never use the mxr for distortion (sometimes with the gain down for a boost but not since getting the volume pedal). I was discovering that whenever I got a nice low level distortion going on the joyo and matched it in volume to the bypassed signal I was just as happy with the same distortion level on the bypassed signal. They were not identical but the joyo was not noticably more distorted.
I am using an old washburn solid state combo amp into the effect return (as the whole preamp section is kaput). I use a few different pedals (chorus, volume, envelope filter) and I'm trying to figure out where the rather musical low level distortion is coming from. It is actually not a problem for me as it does fit the style of music.
I think I'm overdriving the input of something somewhere. I'm pretty sure it's not the amp itself as I still have plenty of volume to play with turning up the m-80.
Does the M-80 add a degree of distortion when active on the first channel?
Currently using an old P-bass copy with the volume and tone bypassed. Going to digitech bass/synth/wah to volume pedal to Joyo to M-80. (tuner on extra output of m-80 - not in the loop).
