interesting - i'll concede that the bits are in need of sharpening. Maybe i'll do an experiment on some scrap wood with different speeds to see what happens. Thanks!

Yeah, with my press anyway the slowest speed works out best, the holes are clean as can be and never burn. When I first started using them I used them at a higher speed and got very similar results to you....mess and heat! Also if you let them get really hot by using them at too high of a speed, you will ruin the bit.
