It'd be great if they're iconic, but not necessary.

I recommend Stax recordings by Booker T & the M.G.'s. Songs like Time is Tight, She Caught the Katy, and Hip Hug Her have nice relatively simple bass lines played by Duck Dunn.

James Brown , Cold Sweat and I got the Feelin'
Wilson Pickett , Midnight Hour , 634-5789 and Funky Broadway (already mentioned.) Listen very carefully to Midnight Hour. Most folks get it wrong. That last 1/8 note goes down , not up.
Temptations , My Girl and Aint to Proud to Beg.
Eddie Floyd , Knock on Wood.
Etta James , Tell Mama.
Otis Redding , Dock of the Bay , Respect (yeah , he did it before Aretha) Try a little Tenderness and Hard to Handle.
Martha and the Vandellas , Dancing in the Street.
The Four Tops , Bernadette , I'll be there (not as hard as it sounds) and Same old song.
I cut my bass teeth on this stuff back in the 60's

If you're just getting started , stay away from Gladys Knight for a while. Jamerson and Babbitt did some incredible stuff with her.
