Simple rehearsal recording via Mac

So, I had an idea to do simple ProTools recordings via a 2-input firewire connection and an analog mixer. I'd mix everything before recording with the analog mixer, then send the 2-channel stereo out into the firewire interface, recording two pre-mixed stereo tracks. Does this make sense? I want to record rehearsals in order to listen to other people parts more clearly later on, as well as to simple multi-track demos of new songs (record one at a time, although I'd probably need to do a mix-down for drums...)

Anybody A) use a set up like that and B) have a recommendation for a good, cheap-ish 2 channel fire wire interface?

Thanks! :help:

Duet is $495 most places and really can't be beat as far as converters and clean preamps. Expensive yes, but well worth it.

However it is Mac only and is made to integrate with Logic. It will not work with ProTools if that is what you choose to use.

If you want to use ProTools you pretty much have to go Digidesign or M-Audio and the Digidesign 2 input box goes for @ $700. M-audio stuff is cheaper although I'm not a huge fan. Cheapest way to go there is Firewire Solo, (I just replaced mine with the Duet).

If you go for other software Logic, Cubase Live etc, then things open up considerably. Lots of people here seem to like the Presonus, and Echo stuff so it's a worth a look at those.

If you are planning to do Pro Tools then M-Audio and Digi' gear are your only choice, PT won't load without one of them plugged in. The higher end Digi interfaces are FW, M-Audio has FW at different price ranges. When pricing remember PT LE comes with Digi gear along with some other extras. M-Audio you have to purchase PT-M separately lists around $250. Also PT is VERY picky about versions of OS it will run on, so plan to run an OS they support.

Hmm, how difficult is it to learn Logic or Cubase coming from being moderately capable on ProTools? Are the controls etc fairly similar, or would I take a couple months to get up and running at the speed I'm at on ProTools (essentially, a one semester class at Boston College on ProTools...)? Thanks guys, you're all very helpful!
