Single Pickup vs. Single Split Coil Pickup

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a single pickup p bass ('51 / Sting bass) vs. a Single Split Coil Pickup p bass ('59 , '62 , American Standard)?

The noise from the single coil pickup is no greater than from a Jazz Bass pickup soloed. Is that a drop dead issue for Jazz basses?

If you search "SCPB" in the search, you will find lots of threads comparing the single coil with the split coil.
