Waxing is definitely the way to go. I keep one of my wife's candles in the shop and all screw threads get a roll through the surface before they go on the bass.

You need to use some paste wax, or bar soap to lubricate those small screws and you won't break them anymore.

EDIT: I see I was beaten to the punch, listen to those guys they know what they are talking about :D
