A good foundation for ska theory is to familiarize yourself with the musical language of 1950s American rock & roll and rhythm & blues. If you can play popular chord progressions in all 12 keys, such as I-IV-V, I-vi-IV-V, or, ii-V-I, then you are off to a very good start in terms of analyzing ska songs. So turn on the Oldies station and start transcribing.
