skb case question?

i've heard a lot about the ventilation problems with certain amps and skb cases. i'm debating using a 3 space skb case for my case due to the mesa shock being a bit much.

anyway, the question is, do you think one can cut a hole or drill small holes into the side of the case to help the side vent fan of my 4 pro?

I'm sure SKB will tell you that it will compromise strength, integrity, and will void the warranty, and they're probably right. However, I think a few well-placed holes would still allow you sufficient strength to get the job done for years to come. Perhaps a better question is: Why would an amp manufacturer design a rackmounted amp with a cooling system that will be blocked when it is racked?

I don't think it will cause a problem, but...just to be on the safe side? I drilled a series of 1/8" holes on the fan side.couldn't hurt.

i have been asking myself this question ever since i got my 1st gen 700RB. i mean, really! would it have been THAT hard to route the fan from the rear? there are thousands of power amps with exactly that configuration. :confused::confused::confused::confused:

it makes my 4 space case into a bulky 3 space one, as there is no practical way to mount another component without covering the fan.

I've had my 4 pro in an SKB case for about 4 years now with no problems or modifications to the case. However I only have my amp mounted in the rack case. I positioned it in the middle so I get ambient air flow on top and underneath the amp. I still gets hot but it stays on the whole time for 4 hr gigs and has never had a thermal shutdown or any other problems.

yeah i think that is what i am going to look into.

i'm sick of my 4 space mesa shock. thing is an animal and it will get used if i'm doing any heavy touring but for just putzing around locally, it's such a pain in the butt.


i'm sure it will void all warranties, that doesn't bother me. it doesn't make sense to me that my 4 pro has a van on the side. :scowl:
