Double Bass Slap issue

I play jazz--walking bass & slap style.
My question: I can slap (to a degree) Double/Triple & Quadruple- but I cannot mix the three slaps and keep time--I can individually. Has anybody encountered the same problem? Is the answer 'just to keep at it?'

When I first started practicing slap, I would start out with single slap on beats 2 and 4 a la Wellman Braud on a two beat feel. Then move on to a double slap, then triple. All done with metronome. YMMV, but getting the feel for how long the measure is helped me fit more complex patterns into my slap solo.
