I'm looking for any good leaning material for upright slap. I've already been playing for years but it was a technique I didn't need for the music I usually play. Now I may have some decent paying gigs coming to me that will require a little slap. If you could point me to some good instructional videos that would be great. If there in YouTube that would be even better.
youtube isnt working for me right now so i cant post anything on here, but i know you can find a few good instructional videos by Lee Rocker
IMHO, the Ungentle Art Of Slap Bass by Mark Rubin and Kevin Smith is the best commercially available instructional video on the market. http://www.melbay.com/Products/RS01DVD/slap-bass-the-ungentle-art.aspx A cat named Dan Enriquez posts as "Memphisevil" on youtube- lots of great stuff here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Memphisevil When you think you're getting good and you need a reality check, look at some Joe Fick: Joe
In addition to the excellent Ungentle Art and MemphisEvil already mentioned... ... I'll add Pete Turland: Nicholas Dubouchet should be on your radar as well, the vid is in French, but still worth a listen and to glean some slap off of it. As much as I like Lee Rocker, I wasn't impressed with his Slap video. It put me to sleep, literally – I couldn't stay awake all the way through it. In addition, he didn't tune to A440 when he shot the video, and IIRC he didn't give a tuning note to tune to him, so everything he shows you in the video is impossible to play along with. I own the Ungentle Art, Pete Turland's instructional DVD and the Lee Rocker vid as well. I liked Pete Turland's best with Ungentle Art a close second.
Rockabilly Slap Bass by Didi Beck is a great book that helps with learning slap. He has a video as well but I think it's in German so I have not purchased it. +1 for Pete Turland's video.
