I really like the direction this discussion has taken, particularly the suggestions as to combo amps from Roland, Fender, Yamaha, and Traynor/Yorkville. Lots of good ideas here!

Sleeper combos on the secondary market

I recently tried a Trace Elliot 715x. 15" + tweeter, 500 watts, expandable. It was pretty amazing, though I didn't like it as much as the rig I ended up getting (I wanted a modular setup anyway).
I can't speak for its weight, but it got f----g loud while remaining nice and clear, and seemed to have a pretty good variety of tone-shaping features.

The OP mentioned the Peavey Databass but wasn't thrilled with the tone. On mine, I added some internal damping and changed the speaker to a 8 ohm with similar T/S specs, and the tone now is quite acceptable to my ears.
