Fathead Newman would rage about those uber-slow tempos Ray would call out, called them 'dead tempos'. I never quite grasped this until I heard Brother Ray on 'Drown in My Own Tears', and sure enough, it's S-L-O-W, and it does take some mental work to feel a tempo that slow:
A live version, far slower than the original studio side. I can only feel it in a sing-song kind of rocking motion off the girls' background vocals.
And blues, regardless of speed or shape, need to be played with authority: Otherwise it devolves into that too-often-seen wandering, shapeless mess.
Another in that realm, but it actually may be a little too uptempo….
Now, this certainly is not the blues, but it's the most funereal, and appropriately slow, song I can think of right now. Literally, concerning the circumstances of its recording…
