Double Bass Small Affordable Recorder

Here's the microphone rig I use. It's made from Panasonic electret capsules, som brass tubing and good Mogami cable. Very simple. I've experimented with single microphones and a battery box for bass amplification, too.

(I gave my sister the fancier ones I made with alligator clips on them- she uses them to record her voice lessons.)

Next project is a self-0contained stereo microphone with two electret dartridges mounted in a screened tube at 45 degrees to each other. Then I might make a matrixing M/S microphone.

Jeez.... I finally got around to listening to DURRLL's clip with the Edirol. First of all, nice playing! Everyone sounds great.

That thing is pretty amazing. I've heard way worse mixes on commercial CDs. It's hard to believe that this thing is available at that price. And it appears to be pretty intuitive, which is important for luddite cavemen types like me.

Damn you, Durrll... February is way too early for me to be filling out my list to Santa!

Weren't you just cussing someone else out about some new expensive strings in a gut thread? Looks like your methane volcano is ready to blow in all directions!

Seriously, the R-09 is a no-brainer. Just the other night I took it to a student combo concert, sat in the front row, pointed it between the bass and piano, set the track numbers between tunes, and that's it. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get the whole concert uploaded into iTunes, then any student/faculty who wants a copy just brings me a blank disc, and they walk away with a great sounding CD. Try to get your tempermental gut strings to do that! :D

I have a student who is trying to record into Audacity with her minidisk mic, but can't get it to register a signal; I think the mic is an electret, and the computer only has a "mic" input, but I'm guessing no phantom power. What should she do to get a signal into Audacity?

My take is she should change batteries on her mic. Those minidisc mics doesn´t usually need phanton power. But if it does, she will have to buy a DI/Preamp that delivers it.

I know... it's really not like me, I don't really GAS that much. I just buy stuff when I need it for the most part. Lord knows I need to sell some basses here at some point.

But answer me this..... how can I really compare my Gamut vs. Dlugolecki strings without an Edirol to A/B them with?:rollno:

Damn.
You bastard.

I was hoping that thing would suck. I've been looking at that for months.

GAS is a huge sickness for me.

Put it on the list.

GAS is one manifestation of this, excellent tone is another. The line between obsession and persistence is often a matter of perspective. Clearly there can be a tendency to look to tools to solve deficiencies in physical skills or the lack of time spent in acquiring them. Yet there is also a deep commitment to tool refinement that is an enhancement to skill refinement. They can look very similar from a short distance away.
