Not sure if it's 70's or 80's but the bassline to 'Say You Love Me' by Fleetwood Mac is pretty cool! Espescially the chorus section.

Agreeing with David-
The Go West(their debut?) album with Pino is happenin'. They also had a cool tune called "Chinese Whispers"...not exactly sure who played bass(not exactly sure of the year, either).
Donald Fagen's The Nightfly has nice basslines all over it(Anthony Jackson on "IGY" & "Ruby, Baby").
Another synth bass tune that translated well to elec bass-
"I Feel For You"-Chaka Khan

"Lopsy Lu" was from the '70s(hadda be...I was in high school when I bought that LP).
The Brothers Johnson's 'best' stuff was also from the mid-late '70s.
McFadden & Whitehead's album was from '79

Ah, well, late 70's-early 80's has kinda blended into cloudy haze for me. Other than some Weather Report...I've got nothing.

I really liked some of the stuff Deon Estus was doing in WHAM! back then. "Wake me Up", Freedom" and "If You Were There" were fabulous examples of great pop bass playing.
Stretching the envelope even further is mentioning Culture Club - "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" had a brilliant bass part.
"Don't Look Down" from Go West was some of Pino's finest work at the time. I find that too many players dismiss eighth note driven lines, but this is one not to be missed.

On The Loose, Conversations... many others come to mind. Not the most amazing, but definately great lines from a great band.

Nothing to groan about there, great playing on all the songs you mention.

This is a great thread. I need to go and try and find my copy of the Go West debut now, somewhere on a by now moth-eaten tape.
On the Loose is one of my all-time favorite songs! I learned to play it note-for-note on guitar years ago. Since most of the bass line doubles the guitar, I should be able to play it on bass now

80's had a lot of far under-rated music IMO. With the image the majority of it had, it is understandable though.
