Smooth jazz bass tone?

Mid scoopy. But forget EQ, just get a jazz bass (70's pickup spacing) with rounds, play over the neck pickup. That'll get you there.

Don't you think that flatwounds have a more mellow tone (less "ring") than rounds?

Yes, but smooth jazz generally calls for a very bright bass tone.

Mind you, I am not a big fan of smooth jazz. (It has, in my opinion strayed too far from the classic jazz roots and resembles the "elevator music" of Muzak.) That said, I could be mistaken, but when I listen to Dave Koz or Kenny G, I hear a softer, more mellow, almost funky tone from the bass. Can you give me an example of the very bright bass tone you hear please?

Never been too much interested in smooth jazz to pay attention to the bass but I think a fretless one could work well on any jazz sub-genre. Planning on getting one myself whenever I can.
