So anyway....

Do you find starting every post with "So anyway...." weird? Or is it just me?

  • Yep. Super weird. Stop it. Stop it NOW.

I can't explain why. But it DRIVES ME NUTS that a few people around here start almost every post with "So anyway...."

To me (and I'm sure reading reading way too much into it) it summarily dismisses pretty much anything said up until that point. It's a typed roll of the eyes. It pretty much says "What they said was stupid. I'm about to drop some real knowledge on you."

I can't tell you why. But it seems incredibly rude to me.

Is there some ridiculously odd culture somewhere where they start every FREAKING SENTENCE with "So anyway...."??????

Stop it! Stop it NOW!!!! It makes want to hit people!

(Seriously, I don't want to hit people. But it's incredibly annoying. Stop it. Stop it now. It hurts my head. And it's weird....like..... VERY..... weird. Nobody does that. Ever. Especially normal people. We would never dream of starting a sentence that way unless the last person who spoke said something outlandishly stupid or inappropriate. Ever. Never ever. Don't do it any more. Weird. It causes me physical pain. I know it shouldn't. But it does. It's THAT weird. So stop it.)

My personal trigger phrase is "back in the day" haha.... I bet we could make a whole story made out of nothing but TBer's triggers - "So anyway, back in the day...." what's next? haha

"So anyway" makes sense when you need to pick up after an interruption, but doesn't fit as a title. That being said, it doesn't affect me.

I'm talking about in the middle of a thread. A few people just start every post with it....as if it take the place of capital letter at the beginning of a sentence. They (literally) can't start a post without it.

What does it mean? What is the purpose? What are they trying to set up for us by starting EVERY post that way?

That's the thing. Everyone has a turn of phrase that, for whatever reason, bothers them. For my husband it is "no problem" instead of "you're welcome." I personally understand what is meant by either phrase and find the fact that someone gets offended by one versus the other to be petty.

If you know what is intended, either take it graciously or eff off. If your life is so comfortable that you have time to worry about this, you are very lucky.

So anyway, it’s not a perfect world. I enjoyed it while it lasted. Now go take your medicine!

We got a half inch of snow here in Eastern NC. As such, there's no bread or milk for a hundred miles, schools are closed tomorrow even though 99% of the pavement is bone dry, and my doctor is in Florida golfing. No meds for me.

(I'm not really on medium. But my doc is a personal friend....and is actually in Boca Raton golfing.)

:D

Then tell me "what is intended" by "so anyway".

Something along the lines of "I'd like you to hear what I have to say."

Really, is it such a big deal that people speak in a particular vernacular? Do you not understand the person's post when they start a sentence with this?

We're all from different cultures, we all speak in different ways. I don't understand why that's upsetting to anyone.
