Ever year, the birds fly south, the planets circles the sun once more, the Druids once again walk the moors, and I have a month or so when it's Steely Dan Time. Add Donald and Walter's solo projects as well, and the NY R$S Review, all in the daily rotation.

So you missed the part in The Princess Of Mars where Deeja Thoris spends a year in captivity with steely Dan ? Of course i am kidding but you are correct. And that series of books was my absolute favorite when I was young.

Was never much of a fan of Steely Dan. I can tolerate some songs when they come on the radio but have never purchased anything they did.
Their music is fun to learn and play, not to mention listen to. Love them!
Steely Dan has always blown me away from the very first listen! The debut album is awesome and they continued. "the Fez and "Kid Charlemagne" are wonderful. Oh Heck - how can you even pick one? I have a surround DVD of AJA in my car and can hardly drive while listening to "Babylon Sisters" in Glorious Surround Sound. I've had the pleasure of meeting Walter socially and the rest of the guys in the studio and could hardly believe my good fortune. Great guys, all. I miss them already.

Becker and Fagan, along with all their many collaborators produced some wonderfully great music over the years.
And SO MANY great sidemen .. Chuck Rainey, Steve Katz, Bernard Purdy, Jeff Baxter, The Brecker Brothers, Will Lee, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tom Barney, Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, Anthony Jackson, Steve Gadd, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Denny Dias ... so many great great players.
There is also the so called Steely Dan chord .. also known as the Mu chord. A very distinctive stacked 4ths add2/add9 voicing in many of their most famous songs.

I really don't think this is a question of the oldest one found but rather it is a great indicator of their off-the-wall approach to music and marketing by naming themselves after a stainless steel dildo from a 1959 novel by William Burroughs (not to be confused with the author Edgar Rice Burroughs).
As both Beckert and Fagen would have been very young (Beckert would have been 9 and Fagen would have been 11-yrs. old), it's very doubtful they read that novel, Naked Lunch, when it came out in 1959. It was a famous novel because there was a court case against it for being in violation of the U.S. sodomy laws. Makes you wonder when and where they read it as well as why they extracted their name from it. Sounds like they did it as a bit of a cosmic joke as Burroughs was a contemporary of their parents, not them and they perhaps presumed most people of their generation would not get the reference. It certainly got past the censors of the time.
Sort of like flipping the bird to their prospective audience and laughing at the joke all the way to the bank...
Very interesting re: mu chord, but the article seems to contradict itself. First they say the special caveat is that the 2 and the 3 must always be a whole step apart, then a sentence or two later they say the quartal harmony (stacked 4ths) is most evident with the 3rd in the bass. But if the 3rd is in the bass, you've destroyed the whole step separation between the 2nd and the 3rd. Putting the second down there is a "slash chord" it says.Special Delivery For Hoops McCann

But I am a hug fan of stacks 4ths. Love a sus4 with a 7, for example. So my fevered mind wonder about a sus4 9 chord, which wouldn't have the whole step between 2 and 3, but could be voiced as two set of stacked 4ths a whole step apart. For example in C: C, D, F, G, Bb, C (one stack: C - F - Bb, the second stack: D - G - C).
I was totally ruined by STEELY DAN! After hearing them the first time,I knew I would never be the same. From there, my musical direction changed. They led me to a more satisfying collection of music as well as a more gratifying bass style,as has every bass player that has taken the time to listen ,(whether they are aware of it or not!).
Well if a Steely Dan is a sex toy, I suspect a carrot also fits what I think about them.
Some of their songs to me are unforgettable. 'Hey Nineteen' is sheer perfection and some of the lesser played ones I love, like 'Dirty Work' and 'Everything You Did' are awesome. I guess for me one of my absolute favorites of any band is 'Deacon Blues'. "I crawl like a viper through these suburban streets Make love to these women, languid and bittersweet". I thought the last one, 'Everything Must Go' was a clunker but the one right before was superb, 'Two Against Nature'. 'Cousin Dupree' is classic Steely Dan. In addition, they made it look easy.
Tom Barney's bass playing (and tone) on Two Against Nature is pretty killer
Gaslighting Abbie (while an odd, but very Dan-esque theme) is mighty fonky
I had never heard of Tom until this album. I read that he is a 1st call cat on the NY show scene. It's cool for an old guy like me to be introduced to new players who can groove
