I find that here I find too much hyper specific info, not enough general info, and not what I’m seeking in the stickies.
The forum format doesn’t feel adapted to carrying vital information forward (the stickies). It does feel like it’s good for people with very specific problems! What we need is a wiki and not stickies. And when I say “we” I mean “me”. The posts that are supposed to grant me the big picture feel like they lead me to posts upon posts of folks giving opinions.
Having some kind of wiki would allow people to make real and long term contributions that were helpful to people who are new. There are so many contributors here that I get instantly lost in the new postings. I know what I’m looking for and I know people here have the information but it isn’t available in a simple to access format.
Yes, search helps a little sometimes but not really. Yes, the stickies help sometimes a little but not really. In the latter case there are way too many irrelevant posts you have to go through. In the former it feels the same.
Well, actually, in the latter I see a lot of outdated links, too.
A wiki is a living document. It is succinct and well organized. It is complete or as complete as it can be.
Forums are great for conversation but, again, don’t work for real things AFAICT. So much bs ends up written and is just out there forever. It may as well be true when it’s what is found when searching but going through stickie posts we end up having to read thousands of posts to get tiny bits of information. We the users do not have the time to follow every link and figure out which users and answers are just off.
