Innovation makes several varieties of strings meant to emulate gut that are lower tension and easy on the hands.

Animas...nice thud with a sexy growl on top. A guy I know is selling a well-used set for $40 if you want to try them out before gambling $300 on a new set.

Velvet Anima is a very good suggestion at 25kg tension per string. Velvet also makes a Garbo Light and a Garbo Gut set: the Lights are 22.5kg The Anima are growlier, the Garbo a little more bouncy and gut-like.
Solo gauge strings are another good option for low tension. Spirocore solos are popular for jazz players, and I like Dominant solos as well.
I've been very happy with Innovation Golden Slaps.
Super Silvers if you'd like a bit more tension, but honestly Golden Slaps are a wonderful and affordable choice.

A bit of this and a bit of that as far as type of music, surprisingly eclectic, but certainly not classical and very little arco.
The Inno.s I mentioned both have a pretty quick decay which is to my liking on an old Kay (Golden Slaps) and a Strunal 5/35 hybrid (Super Silvers).
When I first started into the doghouse my intention was to be much more of a rockabilly slapper than I ended up being, but actually much prefer the synthetic Inno.s to the Spiro weich I had on previously.
Just my two cents...

I prefer silk purse strings to velvet...

The Garbo lights are only 23kg of tension!
The Compass Solo are 24kg of tension – I wonder what the tension would drop to when tuning these to standard pitch.

Rotosound 4000 are very soft on the G and D, A and E a bit harder in my experience. If anyone has the actual tension, I would be very interested for reference.
