Details

Rumano Solano hybrid bass made in 2005. The bass has a 39" scale. I believe this is a bit smaller than your standard 3/4. It is a hybrid bass with carved top. It has a flat-back. The saddle was raised and tail piece was replaced (used to have a metal tailpiece), which helped open up the tone. The lower bout on this bass is huge, which helps give it quite a bit of low end. Comes with Kolstein case.

Asking $3700. Local sales only, but i may be willing to drive a bit to meet a interested buyer.

On average would you consider it a loud bass acoustically? How is the sound overall? Does it sit well acoustically in a small jazz combo?
Top wood spruce? Back and sides? I am a jazz player so anything you can tell me in that context would be great. Arco response is important though as I bow a lot reading and with scale work but do not play in any classical settings except solo and duets. My use would be for jazz. It almost looks like a solo bass with what appear to be narrow upper bouts.

And what about the shorter scale? Was that a choice you made and for what reason?

All these questions kind of tie in together, so let me answer as best I can. And please let me know if I miss anything, or if you have more questions...

When I bought the bass, I actually didn't know it as short scale. Actually I really didn't know until earlier this year when someone asked me what the scale length of this bass is. Having said that, I have always felt the top of this bass was really small but I never really cared to measure it.

The lower bout is quite a bit larger than the top, which i believe gives it the low end that you wouldn't normally find on a shorter instrument. I play with really low action and always with a pickup so I wont comment on how it sounds acoustically in a combo, but I will say in it has average volume and even tone (most likely because of the lower bout). My working bass now is 3x more expensive than this one, so its hard for me to judge at this point. But when I bought it, it was a lot better than anything else I tried in it's price range...

I don't know what the woods are, sorry. Arco response is good too. I studied Classical and Jazz in my undergrad and used this bass for both.

I store this bass at my parents house, so I'll measure it in the morning. I can tell you it's quite large though... I know its bigger than my 3/4 Wilfer. In my scion XD, if i fold down 2/3 seats instead of all 3, it has to rest diagonally instead of flat on it's back.

I appreciate the info. Sounds like an interesting bass. I don't think I'm in the market really for another double bass at the moment. I'd like to get cash. I think I am going to delete the post and sit on it for awhile. Play it a little and maybe put it out there next year.
