Soldering kit advise

I regret having waited as long as I did to splurge on a Weller temperature controlled station.
+1 To everybody who said: "I wish I'd gotten a station sooner".
Third-plus-infinity here. I've made my own patch cables for years (and re-wired at least one bass), but it had always been with el cheapo, plug-'em-in irons from the big box joints. The results have been workable, but I always had a nagging feeling there was a better option to work a bit more neatly. Finally, I "splurged" on a Weller 1010 soldering station last year, and WOW... :woot: I was both floored by the quality and ease of use of it, and mentally kicking myself for using cheap irons for the last 30+ years. :bag: To say the least, I no longer consider a good quality soldering station a splurge; As with any other tool purchase, sometimes you get what you pay for. This one has been well worth it. :thumbsup:

The materials I work with are generally small enough that I still use my old Radio Shack holding-helper clip stand for the most part, with an occasional assist from a wood clothes pin if a cable is long and unruly enough. For magnification, I mounted an illuminated swing-arm magnifying lamp on my work bench, swapping in a nice, bright LED bulb for the non-name compact fluorescent tube that came with it. These lamps are available just about anywhere; mine came from Michael's, but this pic was "borrowed" from Wallyworld:

...I'd recommend a small "Solder Sucker" and some good quality resin core solder. I think all the stuff sold now is lead-free.

Or some desoldering braid.
Last time I was in a Radio Shack they had some small diameter 60/40. I've also seen it on Hobby Lobby's web site but didn't check the size.
For irons i've got a couple of old 936 Hakko stations, i used all the time when i was racing electric r/c cars, and i used them when i first started tinkering with basses, but over time I've gravitated to a 60W Hobbico pencil type iron. It comes with a chisel tip and tapered cone tips are available so it's plenty small enough for anything in my VVT jazz controls. If i'm fooling with an on board preamp i'l break out a Hakko, but for most passive bass work i prefer the 60W Hobbico.

I took some amp building classes about 10 years ago and both guys I studied with recommended the Weller work stations. I have been extremely happy with mine. Having temperature control is important when doing various projects and getting clean solder joints.. Good luck

NOTA BENE! My next purchase will be an extraction fan, or I'll make one. I hold my breath just before the puff of solder smoke comes up, and I still have a soar throat after every solder session, including today's.







The nice thing about ...

Case 1) copper-curlypad vs sponge,
&
Case 2) solder-sucker vs desolder-braid, is...


...You don't have to choose one or the other. They're cheap enough you can have both options in both cases.

I use whatever works best in the given situation I'm in.


Case 1: Most often I prefer the copper-scrubpad, while my mentor uses a damp sponge. The last two pedal builds, I've been using the sponge more than the copperbrilo.

Case 2: Most often I prefer a solder-sucker, but occasionally have had to resort to the brass-braid when for whatever reason the pump didn't suck like it should, and have found times where brass-braid couldn't do what the suction-pump can do.


Get 'm both, in both cases.


Just like I've got third hand w/ alligator clips, and a big PCB-board rotisserie — it all depends on what I'm doing.




Use the best tool for the job, and in most cases that's using your noggin and whatever works for you.
 
I agree with everybody who has advised to keep your tip clean and tinned. Also, the tips geometry is important to me; I file a small flat on the pencil types I own (except the hollow tip style). It may increase contact with the workpiece and possibly wet the joint a little faster, or it may be a mindless affectation, I'm still not sure.

Cleaning and tinning the objects I'm about to solder also seems to help a lot. I use Scotchbrite (spelling?).

If you get in the habit of flicking hot excess solder from your iron, be mindful of what it may hit/ruin.

A good improvised parts holder can be made by wrapping a rubber band around your plier handles.

No advice on work stations, the best suggestions have already been said.

I use a Hakko 936. Hakko replaced it with the FX888D, so for a while the 936 was going for around $30 used on Ebay. Last I checked they were up to $50 or so. If the 888 has been discontinued there will probably be good resale prices on those now. Nice thing about the 936, 888 and so on is that each individual part is replaceable (at reasonable prices) so buying used is a safe bet and you should never have to trash the whole thing if it breaks -- buy it once and it should do you well for life. I wouldn't recommend the Chinese knockoff versions. They're very cheap but the downside is they're also very cheap.

The 936, 888 and other models use the same tips. The authentic Japanese-made tips are really good but the Chinese knockoff tips are dirt cheap and seem to work well enough. It's more useful than you'd expect to have a variety on hand, particularly if you branch out to projects like building effects pedals.

As for solder removal, keep both a solder sucker and a braid and learn to use them properly. Use the sucker to get most of the material out, use the braid to remove the residue.

That's interesting. All my pre-Weller life, I used the damp sponge in the little iron holder, but since switching to the Weller station, I've been liking the copper coils much more. The coils seem (to me anyway) to remove the excess solder without wiping off too much (thus keeping the tip lightly tinned), and doesn't cool the tip off as much as the sponge does, which helps keep the work moving.

Not declaring one right or wrong of course (to each his/her own); just interesting to hear about someone switching from one to the other. :thumbsup:
 
Thank you all for the great advise and suggestions! Much appreciated. I will be going with a station type with temp. control, and will get the appropriate accessories. I didn't know about solder suckers or braids for removing old solder, very helpful. Solder size and types also very helpful. And soldering tips, thank you for that...I need all the help I can get! Lol!

I was using the copper brillo exclusively, but wonder if I'm just wearing away the copper (?) coating on the tips? Recently I've just been using the Brillo when I first start up to get any oxidation off the tip, then using the sponge. I do tin them before putting away, by it seems to oxidize anyway. What is the "right" approach?
 
What is the "right" approach?

First, keep the tip's temperature in check. No matter what, the tip will be oxidizing, all the time. A hotter tip will oxidize faster. This is a big advantage of regulated irons - you can set the temp appropriately and the tip won't just sit there cooking itself when it's idle because the iron is dumb enough that it doesn't know the difference. So, first things first, adjust the temp so that it's hot enough to be useful, but no hotter. A high wattage iron is nice here, since it can dump more heat into the tip to keep the temp correct even when soldering big parts. Thus the magic combination - high wattage to move heat quickly, but regulated to keep itself from burning the tip up.

Oxidation prevents heat flow. So, you want your tip to be freshly cleaned immediately before each use. A tip with a thick blob like layer of molten solder on it will be easier to wipe clean, since you can wipe away the oxidation with the excess solder (the oxidation will be on the surface of the molten blob).

To achieve that, my routine is to turn the iron on, get it hot, and put a big blob of solder on the tip. Then leave it in it's holder until I need it. As I pull it out for each joint, I wipe it clean on the brass cleaner, then use it. After use, touch the solder to the tip to put another blob on it. Then it goes back in the holder for next time. To answer your question - ideally you're maintaining a little thickness of liquid solder while you're working, and a big thickness while the iron is idle, so it's easy to clean right before use on your next joint. So the rhythm is: clean, use, tin, store.

That's the key: Any time the iron is idle, it has a blob on it. Any time it's in use, the blob has been freshly wiped off so when you're working, you have a 100% "fresh" clean tip with a thin layer of very clean solder on it.

Then, if need be for certain parts or certain techniques, you can add more solder to the tip as required. Or if you're populating a big board and doing a lot of joints at once, like you're tinning a bunch of SMT pads prior to populating, you might pause every dozen or so to tin it and wipe it clean mid-use. But the basic rhythm of clean, use, tin, store stays the same all the time in addition to those special cases.

A couple nights ago, I was literally switching back and forth between both as I was soldering. Sometimes you swipe on the sponge and you still have a gob of solder that doesn't want to vacate, stuff the tip in the copper-coily and da - da, da da dahhhhh satisfaction.

That is the best explanation of why you should tin the tip between working with it I've ever come across, thank you.

Most explanations simply state tinning "protects the tip...", some might include "...from oxidation". Your explanation of "heat flow" and "wipe away the oxidation with the excess solder (the oxidation will be on the surface of the molten blob)" goes beyond what to do and offers more than a tacit why.


Another tip for newbs like myself — copper pads are cheap, so when you stuff your tip in to the copper pad to clean it, and the tip comes out of the copper with more solder on than when you put it in ... it's time to get a new pad.

Same for the sponge. So I keep a spare of both the copper-cleaner pad and a spare sponge. After replacing (well, usually just before) I purchase a new backup.




I thought I saw somebody mention using the copper brillo or Scotchbrite for cleaning old PCBs / Vero / Perf board — maybe it was mentioned in another thread? Anyway...

I've mentioned this before in other threads, but thought it may prove beneficial to mention it here, too:

My solution for old oxidised PCBs / Vero / Perf board is a trick I transposed from my days working in a bike shop, from before the days of disc-brakes on bikes...

That ☝︎, dear solder-slingers, is a rim being cleaned of brake-dust and road-grime; what is pictured in hand, note, is the nub of one of these:

It turns old oxidised dull-brown copper into shiny bright newly-minted-penny-like copper.


I had a tiny piece of old vero that was beyond dull, but as I was still waiting shipment of a new batch of vero, so this vero-snippet was all I had to use — I knew the copper was badly oxidised, but tried to use it anyway and the solder wasn't flowing like it should, wasn't sticking. It struck me I could use my Rim Rubber (stop your snickering, I'm trying to be serious here)...yes, rim rubber, and so I tested it on a corner of the vero. Well, it worked so well that during my next shift at the bike shop I bought one of these Abrasive Erasers solely for soldering.

It works on PCBs' shiny silver bits, too, without erasing the solder mask or the lettering (I suppose if you rubbed too hard and too long, you might erase the PCB's silk-screening and make a Genie appear). After erasing the oxidation, wipe the surface clean of any eraser residue.

There are other brands other than Mavic, of course...

If you're a pro solder-jockey, it's unlikely any of your stock of PCBs/Vero/Perf will be around long enough to tarnish.
If you're a hobbyist like me, however, one who hoards years-old PCBs, Perf and Vero, then one of these abrasive-erasers is ideal, and should last several years if not decades before it's down to the nub. It's not like the stuff we solder is subjected to the same level of suffering the rim of a bicycle-wheel is, abused by brake pads and road/trail grit... SO!


Right now, run! Don't walk, RUN to your nearest Independent Bicycle Dealer and purchase your very own Gomme Abrasive/Abrasive Rubber/Felgenreinigungsgummi — Polish those PCB pads to a shine, make your perf project perfect, ensure that solder flows efficiently and verily to your vero.


Batteries not included, some settling may occur during shipping and handling, this offer not valid in some areas, always have adult supervision when operating product, do not operate product while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, objects under the magnifying glass will appear closer than they actually are, your mileage may vary, put the rubber down and keep the shiny side up.
 
copper pads are cheap, so when you stuff your tip in to the copper pad to clean it, and the tip comes out of the copper with more solder on than when you put it in ... it's time to get a new pad.

When mine gets loaded up, I blast it with a propane torch until the solder melts and is blown away. Bonus, it makes some pretty cool drip/splatter art.
 
I bought myself a Weller WE1010 to help step up my effects building game just a couple of months ago and it was a big step up. If you plan to to a lot of soldering (for a hobbyist) I would highly recommend a station. Different communities seem to prefer different brands, but you can't go wrong with Weller or Hakko for hobby level soldering.

That being said, though, I did quite a lot of soldering with a 25w Weller pencil iron (including rewiring multiple basses as well as PCBs/vero) and it got the job done fine so there's no reason to go all out right away if you aren't sure if soldering is going to be a decent percentage of what you're doing. The change was significant for me mainly because it allowed me to speed things up, but it took me a while to get to the point where not being able to speed my soldering up was the thing that was slowing me down... if that makes sense.

For solder I like Kester 66/44 .8mm and found that because it seems to be extremely popular in the DIY PCB community and always seems to be recommended. I use both a wet sponge and a brass sponge. Like @Bleecker says above, I always load my tip up with solder before it goes back in to the holder and I use the wet sponge to clean it off the first time I take it out and the brass sponge while I'm working. The brass sponge doesn't cool the tip down as much and while it's not as good at cleaning solder off as the wet sponge is, it doesn't really matter because if you hit the tip with the brass once in a while when you're working there shouldn't be too much buildup, so I'd recommend having both.
