Soliciting opinions on Yamaha RBX

Hi everyone,

Some may have seen my thread on the Danelectros a little earlier. There have been some great opinions and really helpful insights there. Since I am evaluating that bass against the Yamaha RBX 5 A2, I thought I'd post asking for similar insights from the excellent populace of TB. The bass is going for $390 or so, black 5 string. Similar in price to what I can get the Dano for.

I was hoping some of you may have some insight into whether this is a good deal - I've done a lot of reading on TB and watching on YT and like the tone of the bass. They seem to get rave reviews on TB too. They seem pretty rare in my area as well. I was hoping to determine if I should snap this up while I can. Thanks!

Hard to find bass anywhere these days. One pops up every now and then in my area and usually sold really quickly. I don't own one but have tried one at a store a while back, wanted to think about it as I was looking at another bass, and in a day or so, it was already gone. :( In retrospect, I should have picked it up. Super light bass, - really nice sound and comfy neck (much like the other Yamaha RBX basses, not thin like an ibanez SR but not overly chunky either). The one I looked at and tried was a 4 stringer, not quite sure what to think of the lights but it's different. :)
Between that and the Dano, I personally like the Yamaha better- more versatile.

Thanks for your reply! I agree on the rarity, and really like the tones - and this one is a 5'er so it gives some new options.

I was wondering if anyone had any sense on what a reasonable price for one of these in good nick would be? I've seen conflicting opinions in the other TB threads covering this topic, which are a couple years old. Is $390 or so a reasonable price to be considering?

I called my Yamaha rep as well as a local retailer/dealer (directed from Yamaha) - the retail *apparently* in my area is $1400 or so, and the music dealer would give me a discount on retail, but it would still be 3 times higher than what I can get the used one for.

Those prices sounded crazy to me, so I thought I'd ask if anyone knew what an approximate going rate would be?

Prices for instruments in my area can be ridiculous. I've sourced almost all my equipment from the second-hand market because of that.
