Solid wood and concrete speakers

There are (or at least were, dunno if they're still in business) kits sold for making bookshelf speakers out of cinder blocks. I imagine they can work well if the components are decent. At small bookshelf size, though, I imagine any plywood over 1/2" thick is going to be plenty rigid enough and the added mass and rigidity of a cinder block doesn't bring a whole lot of benefit, except maybe a cost savings if you happen to already have a couple cinder blocks lying around.
