Solo bass on the coffeehouse circuit?

I'm bouncing some ideas around. Let me bounce this off you...

I am considering taking a few songs that I have written and going to an open mic at a coffee house and playing them. Just me, my voice, and my bass. I don't go to coffee houses every week, but when I do go, I don't think I have ever seen anyone play just a bass guitar. I have seen one or two upright cats, sometimes a banjo... plenty of acoustics. Someone out there must do this with an electric guitar.

So the question is, how do you do it? I have never performed JUST ME singing and playing bass. This is sort of the reason why I want to do it... get myself out of a musical rut.

I am not looking for a technical answer... I am just going to bring my bass and plug into whatever sound system they have (DI thru Sansamp).

If anyone out there in TB land has a myspace/youtube of your performance... I'd love to see it.

I'm all for it, but consider bringing a conga player or percussionist with you

Obv someone uglier than you so you'll get the keuter coffee shop wierdo girls

Nothing is more depressing than solo bass, except for solo trombone ;)

My wife of 11 years is a weirdo coffeshop girl. So it's a sure thing. :ninja:

I agree, I might have to find a conga player. Is it really that depressing? :bawl:

I don't see anything depressing about it. You're singing and playing, so basically you're just backing yourself up like a solo guitarist would.

Get up there and do it. Only one way to find out how well it goes over.

I think I am going to pull together three songs. Two original and a cover of something. My intent to is to rehearse the hell out of them over the next three weeks and "debut" them at a party. Friends and family. That will be the dry run for the coffeehouse.

I am considering a looper.

I've thought about doing this - even bought a boomerang to work up some tunes... but I sing like crap, so I figure that I'd need to either stick with instrumentals or get some pretty girl to sing with me (easily had in So Cal, happily...). I just haven't gotten off the dime to even learn how to really use the new 'rang - it's *complicated* and I just wanna PLAY!
