Question at bottom
So I went through yet another show where I was told to bring full setup for "big" gigs, so I ended up bringing my full stack. Yet when I get there, they are extremely unsold on using my post-eq DI. So I simply suggest that I can set it to pre. No, that's not good enough. They give me a Sansamp Paradriver which had the lows and highs boosted, and mids completely cut. Fine, I suffer throught the show completely aware of why I can't hear myself even when I walk off the stage with the wireless and go up front. Again, fine. Then I go through the process of packing up my entire gear and leaving (it's only two 410 cabs, and a 50 lb rack. it could be worse). Once again, fine. But it got me thinking. I have a dbx compressor in my rack. And I love the sound of my amp miced. I don't want to go through the trouble of getting a setup that is unique for the bands in my area when in the end all I need is a little combo amp like half of the other bands we usually play with. I don't mean I have to bring my cabs, but my tone is centered around my head. The other thing is my wireless, tuner, and compressor are all in my rack in the signal chain in a way which is most efficient and completely organized. I leterally had to rearrange most of my setup at the show to put the DI where they wanted it.
Question 1: What if I got a 2 channel rackmount mixer, and run one channel with the clean pre-eq signal straight out of the DI in my amp, and run the other channel using a good mic in front of my amp? Then I blend them to taste. Wouldn't a soundman be more understanding if I give him this option?
For the record, my signal chain is:
Bass > X2 > dbx 166XL with high pass for subsonics > amp
from amp i have a tuner out for my tuner
Question 2: I'm curious as to what is a good mic for micing a bass cab. I've read about Sm 58's and 57's, as well as the PR40 which is just a bit out of my price range.
Ideally, I'd like to keep the entire setup under $500. Some money will also go to a new rack case, as I needed to get one anyways.
