Some advice

Hello. I'm wondering if their happen to be any people here who work small (or large) recording studios in their town recording for local bands or whatever or also work as sound engineers for live music venues? If someone wanted to do this as a career exactly what would they need (training wise or whatever)? this may be a stupid question but my band teacher does this for a living and its something i've been interested in since i wanted a music career and i'm good with tech stuff.

I would suggest talking to your band teacher and read articles about the reality of finding full-time work in the industry today. There isn't a lot of work these days. The more things get computerized the less people needed. Don't listen to the recording schools they paint a great picture to get you to sign up, but then find out maybe one or two of each graduating class finds work and will be in debt for year paying back school loans. I'm not saying don't do it, just know what you are getting yourself into.

The good thing about the modern recording world you can put together home system and start learning the basics. Start recording friends and get a taste for recording. If doing good maybe find some artists you don't know and find out the what its like to deal with artists. In recording besides being a good engineer you need to have a lot of people skills. Get a bit of a local reputation will help in finding some intern work in a studio. In fact ask your band director if you can hand out with him at a recording gig offer to help setup and break down. See what the real world is about.

Last start listening to ALL types of music live and recorded and get a feel for the sound and mix. As engineer you don't pick who you work with so you need to be able to deliver any type of music. All there are a lot of recording websites start reading the postings and articles they will give you a feel for a gig in recording.

alright thanks... i want a career that involves music this and session player are two big things in my mind... Yeah i'll see... I would start recording for friends or for my own band when i get one but chance are my bad drummer will be the son of my school band director lol. I like all sorts of music except rap which i don't consider music. So yeah do you have any suggestions for recording stuff i'm to tired to read though all the stuff in the forums but i'm not tired enough to go to sleep... some stuff cheap because i have like no money.... thank you for the information as well.
