Some issues...

I just bought a Peavey Mark III Amp head for $150, and i'm pretty happy with it. But, I'm still lacking a cabinet. I'm a bit of a do-it-yourself-er. I have two 70 watt, 8 ohm speakers sitting here. Now, the bass head is 150 watts, 4 ohms per channel. I was thinking I could wire the two speakers up into one channel. Can I do this without blasting out the speakers or frying the amp?

If I understand this correctly, 8 ohms + 8 ohms = 4 ohms. What I'm unsure about is the wattage. If I have two 70 watt, 8 ohm speakers on one circut, does that make it
140 watt handling @ 4 ohms, or
the same 70 watts @ 4 ohms?

Thanks!

Watt handling is the same regardless of the impedance. You may not get exactly 140w handling if you wire them together, but in the ballpark. I don't know the ins and outs of speaker building, but it should work for a while. In the long run though, I'd look for something that can handle more horsepower.

Agreed... two 8 ohm speakers that are rated at 70 ohms that are wired in parallel *should* handle approximately 140 watts, and will end up being 4 ohms...

Just noticed, though:

"Now, the bass head is 150 watts, 4 ohms per channel."

That's not entirely accurate - there's only one channel out, and it's 4 ohms minimum - the Mark III definetly cannot handle "4 ohms per channel"... I just wanted to correct the OP, because he sounds a bit mistaken... Jimmy was spot on, though...

140 watts handing with a 4 ohm load. But there's quite a bit more to building a speaker than sticking drivers into a box. I'm not aware of any appropriate drivers with that low a power rating, so they may be hi-fi, in which case you probably would blow them out in short order.
