Something besides a ThunderTron inside a ThunderTron?

So I've got a bass with two TV Jones ThunderTrons installed. They rock, but are not the flavor I'm looking for. But, AFAIK, they are a unique shape (with the exception of other TV Jones pickups I'm not interested in). If you were in my shoes, what would you do? I'm not going to send them back to TV Jones and say "make me something better", but I'm considering reaching out to another manufacturer to see if they can fit another pickup inside those covers. Are there other options I'm missing?

What I'd like to avoid is doing any extra routing or putting anything else in the cavity that doesn't fit.

Thanks for the link. I actually heavily researched their pickup line before buying, so I can say I'm not really interested in their other options. I'm finding out that I'm a fan of strongly overwound pickups with a "thick" sound. TV Jones pickups are all very lightly wound compared to most pickups, and have a great sound, its just not what I prefer.

Yes, I agree they are lighter wound, a "clearer" pickup. I try every couple of years to try to make myself like them as well, and just can't. That said, unless the pickup has been epoxied, it can be re-wound. Ray Butts, the inventor of the pickup, even re-wound Chet Atkins' own bridge pickup to @ 8 kohms' worth of wire on it.

On the guitar side, TV Jones does sell some overwound versions, but I don't think they are taking orders for special bass pickups or rewinds. I would contact one of the other boutique guys, like Novak or Duncan Custom Shop, and see if anybody will rewind the pickup with about 8 to 9 kohm's worth of wire. That would cost about the same as a custom pickup anyway, and it would obviate any issues of routing out anything.
 
If you're so inclined, I'd suggest trying some of TV Jones' overwound guitar pickups. Polepiece spacing won't matter.

I disagree that it won't matter. The fillister heads on the screws do tend to focus the magnetic field string-to-string. But the shaft of the screws is a common diameter and thread, and you may be able to find some larger head screws that will spread the magnetic field.
 
Are your pickups direct-mounted? Or do you have the English mount versions? If the latter, you should be able to use guitar humbucker sized pickups with minimal cavity modification, and I think it would be hidden with the pickup ring anyway. Got a photo?

Well shoot. Looks like you have one of each!

I still think you could retrofit guitar-sized pickups (with the mounting rings) with minimal modifications. This opens up the field of candidates quite a bit. I'm very fond of my Wilde L90 4H pickups.
 
Many people are skeptical of using guitar pickups on bass. And it is true that many of the aftermarket guitar pickups do not produce a pleasing tone when used with a bass guitar. But the reason for this is that many of the aftermarket guitar pickups are intentionally overwound, which produces a strong midrange emphasis, at the expense of low and high frequencies. And "midrange" to a guitarist winds up being "high midrange" for a bassist, which explains the unpleasant tonal profile and thus the poor reputation they have amongst our community.

However, the physics behind guitar pickups is exactly the same physics that makes bass pickups work. They are all essentially coils of wire wound around magnetic poles (or magnetized slugs). Nothing sophisticated at work here. Couple this with the fact that electric bass guitars are very, very similar to electric guitars - the only real difference is that one produces notes about an octave below the other. They both use ferrous strings that excite the magnetic field(s) of the pickup(s). Therefore, a guitar pickup will produce a signal when a bass string excites it, and a bass pickup will do the same if used on a guitar.

Where the differences lie is primarily in the typical tonal goals. Most rock/metal guitarists like that overdriven, saturated, mid-heavy sound, as it interacts well with their effects and amplifiers. However, many guitarists have very different goals; many working in the country/folk/jazz realms value a flat frequency response, in which the full spectrum of the plucked string is reproduced and transmitted as faithfully as possible. And guess what - pickups designed to produce a flat response on guitar are also very, very likely to produce a flat response when used on a bass guitar!

Bill & Becky Lawrence's pickups (marketed under the "Wilde" brand name) fall into this latter category. One of Bill's fundamental design goals throughout his many years as a pickup maker was a clear, full-spectrum tone; his pickups are designed to recreate the natural sound of the string. And that they do, as anyone using his P46/J45 pickups can tell you. But his guitar pickups are also built to that same end.

I recently built myself a Flying V bass. I wrote to Becky at Wilde and asked her about using some of Bill's designs in the V. Her reply was that Bill always felt like the L90, in its 4H incarnation, would make a great bass pickup. So I ordered a pair, installed them, and wow, what a tone! Full, clear, and loud! Now I'm considering building a G3-inspired bass using a triplet of L45s...

In truth, the modern distinction between "guitar" pickups and "bass" pickups has more to do with the available form factors for retrofitting, than actual tone (the obvious exception being the afore-mentioned overwound, "mid-focused" pickups). Any "guitar" pickup with a reasonably flat tonal profile should perform well on bass guitar. Don't discount unusual options simply because they're unusual!

Wow. That is some good information. I love it when my preconceptions are challenged in this forum. Thanks for sharing. I will definitely look into some flat response pickups now.
