I do not have a 5 string fretted and need one. I have a 6 string 36 scale and a fretless but this project needs a 5 fretted. I almost bought from here a nice Fender American, a Sandberg TM5 on reverb that the seller took off the market and almost a Modern Sadowsky, Metro made in Japan also. But common sense and my wallet said no, because I have windows and AC unit to fix and upgrade and no discretionary budget, means no credit card use. So a bass comes up on CL for ~300. Frets have been worked on already and I've always wanted a white bass. I never thought I'd buy a Squier - yes I am vain sometimes. It plays really good and I sanded down the back with steel wool.
I also happen to have some black Y-Shaped ultralite Hipshot tuners that a friend gave me 4 years ago. Someone on reverb sold me for 45 a 5 string kick-ass bridge. Since I just recently modded my Japan Fender jazz special with EMGs, I got curious with EMG and got me a JAX5. So for 235 more, I think I got myself a really decent bass. The JAX5 are wonderful pickups. Not so sterile (transparent ) , warmish, not scooped plus really quiet. I also got the BTS tone control but will probably hold off putting it on. The X series tone control is good, like a useable passive tone which means you do not have to wait until the very end to get some tone change. Plus I do not have to deal with shielding or getting OCD on pickup heights. Other pickups I l was looking at are more money also.
I did route a battery holder in the back. I'll update or reply to this post with some sound cloud files. Before and after. (Maybe I should have wait to get the sound files to be ready -- but we all are graphic here on TB it seems ).
Proof (not a very flattering picture). Next to it is my 29 inch scale baritone Strat which is tuned Half-Nashville (the inner 2 strings are the highest pitches ). Was my old 94 Strat also with EMGs whose original neck warped. I lost the allen screws for the other tuners. I ordered some black ones. I just need a black string retainer and a plate to have a complete Black and White scheme. (I hate tort so do not suggest that ). Bonus points, shy of 9 lbs for weight.
