Songs that aren't cool to like

I'm not too old and neither are you. But I feel the same way.

On Saturday afternoon I like nothing more than to hang out by my pool with the kids and wife listening to (brace yourself) Jimmy Buffett. Sorry, but he is a great story teller and his bands have always been great. You just have to get past Hawaiian camouflage and cheeseburgers. "He Went to Paris", "Coast is Clear", "Tin Cup Chalice"......

I don't know a single other musician that likes Buffett. They have never listened past "Songs You Know By Heart" crap though.

I like what I like.

Of course, I also like to put on K-Love during a cookout too (Christian pop/rock station). The looks on people's faces is priceless. Hey, even with a beer in my hand, I love Jesus and he loves me. :cool: Honestly though, we went through a little dry spell. But in the last few years Christian music had grabbed another gear. There are some really good songs coming out.

^100% this! Between modern black gospel and songs by acts like MercyMe, TobyMac, Newsboys, Hillsong United, etc., there's quite a renaissance going on.

Back to pop music:

"Rocky Mountain High" - John Denver
"It's Not Unusual" - Tom Jones
"Little Green Apples" - O.C. Smith (also covered by a host of other singers)

"Say You'll Be There" by Spice Girls. Song is catchy as hell and has a wicked bass groove.

Also, "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey. My friends don't understand that Marcus Miller lays down mad fretless groove on that. They just wonder why I listen to "chick music."

The one kind of songs that are not cool at all is pop star's butchered covers of hard rock classics. I'm talking about dreadful covers like mariah carey's cover of def leppard's bringing on the heartbreak(Barf!), brittney spears' cover of joan jett's I love rock 'n' roll(Blasphemy!), and celine dion's cover of ac/dc's you shook me all night long(yuck!). these cover songs were not only butchered, but they're an abomination. and a good reason why pop stars should keep away from hard rock. because crap like this would happen. if you haven't heard these covers, consider yourself lucky. they're really terrible.

I love a ton of pop that ain't 'cool' for musos to be into.

Like Mariah, Whitney, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Jessie J, Christina, Adele, Alicia Keys.

I also dig a ton of old school jazz
Like Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Hampton Hawes, Gene Ammons, Herb Ellis, Red Mitchell, Ray Brown, Dexter Gordon.

I think a lot of people who think they are cool, would think my taste are uncool.

Material Girl - brings back memories of dating a girl that was way too young for me. Sorry to disappoint the pervs out there, but she was legal.

And theme from Sponge Bob Square Pants. I'll sit in front of the TV for 20 minutes, bass in hand, so I can jam it when it comes around.
