I say no. There's no way I can emulate what the SS does with any EQ. Now as far as it adjusting the "speed" with which the frequencies travel....mmmmmm.....not so sure. But what it does, I have to admit, I really like. One thing -- using it in an effects loop will create a loss of overall tone. You need to go direct into the amp input. Don't know why. It just seems to be the case. Anyone else experience this?
"Just" an eq? I guess not. "Primarily" an eq? Yeah, I'd say that. The controls for "Lo Contour" and "Process" are defined in BBE's product sheets as boost-only low and high shelving eq's. Now, there is reportedly a fixed delay applied to the treble eq portion, but it's not an adjustable phase control. So, you're just hoping that whatever treble phase correction is correct for your amp & room environment every single time. Plus, the only way you even get that "phase correction" is to boost some highs! In the end, you have to boost some lows ('Lo Contour') in order to compensate... The result? Scooped Mid eq! Sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered - in which case, great! Sonic Maximizers are fine, but with this type of implementation it's hard to discount the fact that it's pretty much applying a "smiley-face" eq overall. At the end of the day, if it works for you, then it is working like you need!
That makes total sense. Thing is-- it isn't quite the same. I notice it even more with the upright. If I use a scooped EQ with the upright it loses all its guts. With the SS, it just gets "clearer." Every time. Every room. Go figure. If it is an EQ, it's like one I've never heard.
