Soundcard Help..

I hope this is the right forum.

I havent really invested any money into getting an actual setup for my computer so I can record some playing. All I'm going is plugging my bass into my effects processor and then into my line in on my sound card.

The problem is, when I play back the recording, the sound "studders". Its like a record skipping. I've updated all of the drivers and it still does it.

What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

I'm willing to put in some money if I should get a new sound card but I dont want to spend alot. This is simply to get some ideas onto the computer. Not to do professional recordings.

When you are playing back hit control/Alt/Delete and check out the performance tab, might be eating up your processor.

+1. I'd say you need a processor and RAM upgrade, but check the CPU utilization during playback like amistybleu said to be sure.

I'll check that out.. The problem is, it didn't use to do this about a year ago.. Now, it does.. Only difference is I've reinstalled WinXP since then but have made sure all of the drivers are current.

If you can it's best to a separate drive for recording data.

Use zero-latency monitoring, and increase the buffer size?

Which soundcard do you use?

do a search for optimizing windows for audio recording, you should find many sites that will help you to close unwanted programs that run in the background, this will free up valuable RAM and processor use.

How many tracks are you playing back.

This is all single track stuff.. Just recording me playing into SoundForge

The playback itself is stuttering? (check the waveform to see if the stuttering isn't built in there)

You can adjust the buffer sizes (latency) in SoundForge, just make the playback buffer larger.

It doesnt seems like its in the wave form.. I adjust the buffer and it didn't help much. I've also tried the optimization suggestion for recording and that didn't help..

Its just the onboard sound card in my mother board.. Maybe it just sucks..
