Double Bass soundpost changing question

the other thread on soundposts bring to mind a question. i had a repairman who recommended changing the post every few years. he said that a softer newer wood was better. i remember hearing the improvement. i also remember my old post clanked like a marimba bar and the newer one just had a soft clunk (when dropped on a tabletop). just wondering about people's thoughts. thanks

Most makers and repairpersons prefer older wood (more stable). I think your guy changed either the position or fit when he cut a new post, and that's why your instrument sounded better.
