Source Audio Hot Hand Problems

Hi there,

To all those of you who have a Source Audio Hot Hand

I just bought the ring and the BEF PRO (envelope filter) to go with t and was pretty excited about it!..

When I hook up the ring and put the pedal in hot hand mode the hot hand does work, BUT, the effect's sound is VERY MUDDY sounding and the wobbles are not that dramatic as I see at their website...Am I missing something here perhaps? The Sweep Range is in full and I have tried various equalizations and even tried to emulate what they do with the effects pedal but to no effect :S... I normal mode the effect sounds sweet but once I go in Hot Hand mode it gets very very muddy.

Any help here??

Thanks :)

Lets go one step at a time with this.
1) Ensure that the BEF Pro is working in envelope mode. Pick a filter which is really obvious.
2) Make sure the ring is charged. Does it blink slowly when you turn it on?
3) Plug in the receiver to the BEF Pro. Does it blink slowly?
4) Do you get a solid light on both the ring and the receiver?
5) Select the Hot Hand on the BEF pro. Pluck a note. Point up to the sky and then point down to the gound. Is the filter moving?

If this does not do it, please send a PM to Itswac or a email to [email protected]. We will get you going!

It's important to note that the BEF Pro is meant to deliver a huge variety of sounds with or without the hot hand.

Within the realm of the hot hand, there is still a massive variety of tones to get. Some are great for low end wobbles and some are great for high frequency harmonics.

The best effect for you depends entirely on what sound you are trying to achieve, but I can assure you that your sound is in there somewhere.

This might be a good starting point: We shot a tutorial a little while back that goes through getting some good dubstep wobble sounds with the hot hand:

How to Play Dubstep Bass Wobbles with the Hot Hand - YouTube

I recommend setting #03 as a good starting effect and then make sure you have the Frequency knob properly set.

Thanks for your replies especially coming from the Source Audio staff it says alot about your company.

I have got a rehearsal tonight and will check about the LED's you told me to check. The ring definitely does not 'blink' but the receiver I'm not so sure...

Lemme check and get back to you

Also I have seen alot of people using the Hot Hand (perhaps with a distortion pedal) and do not pluck the bass or anything and get TONS of volume from the instrument.. In my case I still have to play the bass (I own a 94' Stingray 5 and plugged through an Ampeg SVT VR w a 6x10) normally in order to get some wobble...
Am I missing something?

(sorry for d bunch of questions but over here where I live nobody knows these things exist )

@itswac

Stock Stingrays tend to be active basses in my experience. Can't speak with absolute certainty in this case, however.

@novo

I made a couple of posts in this thread, right on the last page, where a couple of suggestions of mine seemed to be of considerable help to somebody having similar issues as you. Hopefully they will be of use! :hyper:

No the stingray is active (I don't think there exists a passive stingray)

Been fighting with the pedal for two weeks now but I have not got a decent effect out.

I feel that the wobbles are weak and WAYYY Muddy

although Thanks @Yutra I will try what was said in that post! :)

Have you considered that this might be an issue of your amp/eq? I don't have a BEF (yet) but in the past with other pedals I've found myself eq-ing very differently than i would with dry bass tone. Also, maybe try your luck on another bass amp, personally I've always found SVT's pretty dark and sometimes muddy, but the muddiness I could say came from the 2x15 cab.

i just got my hothand 3, everything was great and working until i messed around with SELECTING AN OUTPUT MODE from the manual. and then after that, no more response, no more wobbles. what did i do? is there a factory reset that i can do? can anybody please help me here. many thanks in advance.

Okay so I just got my hot hand 3 and manta bass filter but have no idea where i should be calibrating the axis' to, it seems to be much less responsive than every single video i have seen, and the manta petal that nathan mavarrow uses in the demonstration video is clearly different then the one for sale with soundbox, would anybody be able to shed some light on this situation for me?

Wow! This thread is from 2012! I will ask Nathan to respond. It has been a long time since I have responded to Hot Hand questions.

Hi Dennis,
When calibrating, you should hold the ring at the midway point of the motion that you're using to control the Manta. If you would like to have a larger response from the ring, turn the HH receiver's "depth" knob all the way clockwise, and it's "smooth" knob all the way counter-clockwise. You'll also want to turn the "depth" knob on the Manta all the way clockwise or counter-clockwise. I also recommend using the "option select" button to select the "drive" and "type" parameters, and dial in some overdrive. The Manta I used in the demo video is the same as the others coming from the factory, but a couple reports of Manta's being programmed as Orbital Modulators have come in recently. If you think this may be the case, please reach out to us at [email protected]

Hello, My hot hand has decided to stop working. I turn on the ring and the blue light of the receiver stays on as it should do normally, I connect to the pedal '' Manta '' but when I try to use this does absolutely nothing and I do not understand why. I tried to reset it but nothing changes and I also checked the cable is fully functional ... how can I solve my problem? and in case of need for repairs you tell me if in Italy there are the service centers?
