SPDIF input

I'm hoping that someone has pulled this stunt off and can advise me. I have an 8x8 FireWire interface that no longer communicates properly. The I/O functions still seem to be working properly however. In addition to the FireWire port there is also an optical port on it.
Are there any ideas or recommendations for converting that optical signal to USB or ethernet?
 
The usual solution to this is to buy another interface that allows for SPDIF input. Connect the new interface to your computer via USB or ethernet (per the OP), connect the old interface to the new via SPDIF. You'll now have access to the I/O for both devices, but the non-I/O functions of the old interface won't do anything.

I looked into this a while back. The Markbass Vintage Preamp has a S/PDIF output. So I assumed you could connect the preamp to the computer via this type of interface.
