Double Bass Speaker Question

Eminence has a few 12-inch neo drivers to consider. Most of their drivers come as 8-ohms as standard however. There's also B&C and Celestion. The Celestion BN12-300S is available in a 4-ohm version I think.

Each of these drivers will sound quite different and will work best in different size enclosures with different tunings. While DYI can be a lot of fun, it can also be very time consuming, not to mention expensive, to determine what really works for your application.

I put an Eminence made PowerHouse 12" 4ohm into my Peavey BASIC112, thus giving me a 70+watt combo over the stock 50watts. Sounds cleaner, being a Neo-mag made it lighter, and gave me what I wanted. Many would poo-poo such an endeavor, but as I said, it's what I wanted!

Thanks for all the ideas so far. Regarding the Wizzy 12, I am hoping to find a raw driver rather than a cabinet. I don't think EA sells drivers by themselves.

Since starting this thread I've come up with a couple of candidates, the Faital Pro W12N4-200 and 12PR300. The W12N appears a little weak at the low end, though.

Probably not, but that Wizzy 12 M Line definitely on the A list of Double Bass Speaker Enclosures. Eminince sells a 12 LF Driver with a wizzer cone, but it's designed primarily for P.A. applications and weighs 10 lbs (not a neo).

Don't mind at all. It's because I have an amp which, like many bass amps, produces maximum power with a 4 ohm load, but for weight and space reasons, I would rather have a single-driver cabinet rather than one with multiple drivers in parallel or series.

Fair enough. I don't know which amp you have, but if it's a fairly typical 300W at 8 ohms, 500W at 4 ohms kind of configuration, you're not going to find a full-range 12" driver that is going to make use of more than the 300W in any case. And even if it could, as I'm sure you're aware, you'll get 2-3 dB max more out of it running at twice the power. If the time comes that you need/want to be appreciably louder, having an 8 ohm driver gives you the option of expanding your rig.

Each of those speakers will require different sized boxes with specific port tuning.

You'll also want to consider bracing and finishing.

I've built a couple speakers cabs myself, but when all said and done it's cheaper and faster to just buy a commercial speaker cabinet. There are guys out there with years of experience who've designed optimized boxes for specific drivers.

My only other suggestions would be to do your research and run the drivers you're interested in through the WinISD program.

If Avatar is selling their custom 4-ohm 12" neo speakers separately, they are violating their agreement with Eminence and risk losing Eminence as a supplier.

I never said avatar is doing that...
And did not mean to imply that.
I got the speaker out of an avatar cabinet I bought.
But I am sure you could purchase that speaker from some authorized dealer.
I was trying to point out that his original idea worked for me.

Thanks for the clarification, and my apologies for the misunderstanding.

Faital Pro makes a 4 ohm 12" neodymium woofer that looks suitable for bass, the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], sold by US Speaker.
