decided i wanted an offset 5 string with jazz pickups. sourced parts probably the most bass-ackwards way: caruthers neck with tuners from the classifieds section, dimarzio area j pickups, babicz bridge. contemplated a warmoth body but I'd have to modify it for the neck anyway, so eventually found a squier vintage modified bass body that included pickguard, control plate, and bridge which i sold to recoup some of the 70 bucks i paid for it
here it is in my front seat while driving home
by the time i got home i had disassembled it
used the heat gun to stop some of the paint and sanded through a bit of the sealer to discover two wood construction! 5 piece... alder? basswood? no clue
chiseled out the pocket to fit the neck, started a cutout for truss rod access
that was all October through December. it sat for a long time until this week when i filled the unneeded top rout with scraps of.... pine, poplar, and ply, some titebond iii and, eventually, a healthy slather of wood potty. sanded flat, body completely stripped. my dad (former woodshop teacher and builder of one acoustic guitar per year) always used to say "caulk and putty, carpenter's buddy"
thinking of adding a small piece of wood at the end of the neck pocket to follow the contours of the neck (and hide my not so stealth screw plugging)
neck came with a tung oil finish, which i stripped because i do durable finishes (varathane ultimate waterbased poly). the problem with that: it's so clear, and maple looks terrible without a bit of yellowing, so i added a mixture i keep on hand of brown, yellow, and red analine dyes to mimic yellowed lacquer
close enough for me
so where i now stand: waiting for the old man to send me some veeners for the front and back. figuring out the neck pickup rout on the top (I'm considering angling the bass side back towards the bridge like \), figuring out the rear rout for the control cavity and battery box, building the original Leo-designed music man 2 band preamp on perf. plan to finish the body with some sort of blue burst. haven't thought about knobs yet
today i shall finish sand the neck, buff it out to a gloss (along with the roadstar ii neck and a guitar neck. giving the roadstar ii body another day or so to dry)
