Spector and Bartolini

Hey all. So I've recently bought a *gorgeous* Spector Euro4 LX in black cherry. I love the Bartolini PJ pickups and TonePump. However, I can't find any information on those Bart's online other than them being "custom wound." Does anyone know what original specific model they took to custom wind? What the custom winding did ? Extra top end ? More lows?

It's surprisingly difficult to get tech information about Spectors....

at Bartolini.

Hopefully he's still there as he has answered a lot of my questions regarding various Bartolini off the shelf pickups and custom pickups for various signature basses. He was very helpful with my questions concerning the 'custom' Bartolini pickups used on the Czech made Dean Jeff Berlin basses from the late 90's early 00's where Spector basses were also made.

Great stuff, thanks

@Katoosie

I know Katoosie owns a really nice Spector Euro 4LT that came stock with custom wound Bartolini PJs and the custom Darkglass preamp. Not too long ago she swapped out her Bartolini’s for EMGs.

I’ll let her give you her experiences with both the Bartolini’s and the EMGs.

I haven’t heard the custom wound Bartolini’s, but I’ve been a fan of Bartolini pickups for a very long time. I currently have 4 different models of Bartolini’s in various basses that I own, and I’m very happy with all of them.

Hey and hope you're enjoying your new baby bass :)

I've owned my spector euro lt4 with barts and the darkglass for a while now. It is not the same setup as yours but even so - I think I can chime in a little bit, with whatever very unprofessional info I have.

Since right now Bartolini doesn't offer these pickups, you cannot really check for a current offering that would correspond to these specific puppies in the euro.

Having said that, the barts that come with the euro are not any newish thing and they are not hum canceling, meaning the J.

Seeing how the 5 string euros with barts came with these special pickups that have a higher output level and resonant peak for enhanced treble response and the neck pickup that is wound for a slightly lower output, I would wager the same is true for the 4 string version.

Granted, I don't have any proof of this and I go off of my own research. You would have to bother Spector and Bartolini for exact info and not rely on my esoteric, claimed knowledge.

I don't think any of my own experiences with the Barts vs EMGs are relevant here since its like comparing apples and oranges :)

Bottom line is - ask them directly if you REALLY want to know :bassist::D:laugh:

Hey. Thanks. It's a laaaaverly bass for sure.

So I did email Bartolini. The reply was
"The custom proprietary pickups we make for Spector are just that custom and proprietary. That they want to be mysterious about them is their prerogative.
Our Classic bass pickups are the closest stock, catalog pickups to the voicing of these is all I can say about them.
4-String Classic PJ-Bass - 8CBP + 9CBJD - Bartolini Pickups & Electronics"

He then subsequently confirmed the J is *definitely* hum cancelling - dual coil inline to be precise.

I'll see if Spector are willing to ruin the "mystery!"

I don't see the point of the mysteriousness personally - it reminds me of when Rolls Royce never quoted horsepower outputs and only stated that they were "adequate."
Spector might be the Rolls Royce of the bass world to some but still....

I don’t know what he means but im pretty damn sure the J in the stock spector bartolinis that I own are not hum canceling. Oh well, good luck with your quest! :)

The J is hum canceling and the EMG’s are crisper or brighter if you will than the Bartolinis

Yes. The 9CBJD’s are definitely hum canceling. I have a set of the bright tone 9CBJD’s in my Mike Lull M5V, and It’s dead silent. And FWIW, I’m extremely happy with their tone.
