Spector Question

What does it mean when a bass has passive pickups but active controls?

I am looking at a used Spector Legend 4 that has EMG SSD's looking at the pics I do not see a battery compartment. So I am assuming its a passive bass.

I am reading up on the Spector's and I seem to have found it described as Passive pickups with active tone control.

Any input would be appreciated also any input on the legend 4.

The pickups are just that passive....it still takes a battery because it has a preamp called the tone pump making the volume and tone knobs active

To change the battery you have to open the whole thing on the back.
Not that much trouble if you ask me.
