Hi, just had this idea from reading a previous thread which piqued my interest.

A few members agree that spiccato is a very useful technique but might be difficult for some of us to master.
I am currently working on spiccato, have made a bit of progress and would be interested and motivated by others at a similar level working on this technique.

Anyway, I'll start by sharing my current method. I'm simply bouncing the bow on open strings, feeling the bounce at different speeds. Griping the bow very loose, especially with the thumb. I use French bow.
I'm also doing several down bows at a time, bouncing at the balance point, then several up bows at a time. Slow speed.
I'm then going up-down several times. I'm also doing down bow on D string followed by up bow on A string to get the bow motion right.
I'm only practicing this for about 5-10 minutes a day and it is beginning to feel more natural.
I'll go into more detail if others are interested in contributing to this thread.

I recommend the book in the attachment. There has been a discussion back on TB back in 2005.
There are a few spiccato exercises.

I've been working through this book lately. Good recommendation.

I've definitely done the type of bouncing exercises and experimentation the O.P. mentions. It's helpful. For me, my best spiccato doesn't happen when I think, "Play spiccato here," but when the speed of the notes just kind of makes it happen.
