Spinal Tap moments?

Discussion in 'Ask Justin Meldal-Johnsen' started by blizzard, Sep 22, 2008.

  1. Hey Justin,

Seeing you've been a professional musician for years and have toured with many big acts, I'm guessing you have your share of 'Spinal Tap' moments. Care to share some of the best?

    I'll give you one:

    Pine Knob Amphitheater, Michigan, 1997.

One of the biggest shows of that tour, a total sell-out, maybe 18K people there.

We had this crazy rigging guy, I forgot his name, who would clip himself up to a motor and quickly ascend to the rigging during soundcheck with lots of bravado. He was doing something silly at one point, coming down really fast while we watched and laughed. Then he suggested that he could clip Joey in there (our drummer) and we could have him ascend (wearing a hidden harness) at some point during the show.

Well, the show ended, and during the final notes of Devils Haircut, Joey started going up. At about 4 feet per minute.

We all stood there agape, as he lamely ascended, spread eagle in the air, at a snail's pace, still hanging there about 8 feet above his drumset well after the houselights went up. People in the audience were mystified. The look on Joey's face was priceless.

    The most brilliant anti-climax ever.

That is SOOOOO funny! I wonder what those dudes were thinking? Regardless, they made an incredible pop culture statement.
