Splitting your signal into multiple channels

Hi, I am curious about a technique that I heard Dirk Lance used to use when he was in incubus. Here is the quote from wikipedia that got me thinking:

"For his career with Incubus he used Eden Amplification products. With his somewhat complicated setup, he would divide his sound 6 ways. Firstly, he would carry a clean signal and a 'dirty' signal. Each of these signals would further be separated 3 ways into low frequencies, low mids, and high mid frequencies. Usually Eden WT 100 preamps and WT 1000 power amps were employed. This results in two tri-amped signals, one clean and one with effects.... He has been quoted as saying 'Everyone makes fun of how huge my rig is until they actually hear it. My tone makes people cry!'"

I definitely don't want to lug around 6 different stacks (until I have roadies to move it for me ;) I would like to be able to potentially use a second amp to help fill out the signal. Right now I am using a 500 watt 2x10 with a horn, and it sounds great, but it doesn't have much thump. I am thinking I want to add a 15 inch combo amp that would handle the lows with a dry signal, and then use the 2x10 I have now for the mids and the effects.

Anyone have any recommendations about the best way to do this? I can't seem to find any results on google about splitting the signal. My idea right now is to plug directly into the 15, then go from the effects out into the distortion, and then from the distortion to the effects in on my 2x10, and just tweak the eq on each of them to emphasize the frequencies they are strongest with. Any thoughts?
 
A stereo chorus pedal would also give you two signals to use, or a simple A/B/Y box.

If you are just trying to chain 2 amps together, you can use the DI or tuner out of one in to the input of the other amp (adjust input gain as needed).

If you are actually wanting to bi-amp the signal, then you'd need some sort of crossover I'd imagine.
