Double Bass Spray Rig

Attaching to the inside of the pegbox via the tuner holes is a great idea!

I also played with the angles of the block inside the pegbox to get a straight line thru the bass from the guitar holder shaft to the endpin. It stays balanced and doesn't want to rotate from uneven weight front to back.

I don't feel there's too much strain on it suspended level like that, maybe 8-10 lbs (I'll check tomorrow when I'm back in the shop). It's probably a lot less than the pull of the strings.

The instrument weighs maybe 20 pounds. That's not a lot of stress on a well glued joint.

CDickinson, are you spraying it with poly (or NITRO?) in your home? Bad idea on many levels.

I'm spraying it in my shop. My spraying space which has a Grizzly "spray booth" exhaust fan works great with guitars and I use nitro with them, but it is too small for the bass. I have it just outside the open door of that space with the fan running. I'm using General Coatings Enduro-Var with TransTint dye stains for enhancing the flamed maple grain and shading.

Are you using an HVLP gun? Mind sharing more of your process with an old retired college woodworking instructor?

I just bought a Black Widow HTE gun from HF. I uses 70 lbs. out of the compressor and 35lbs. at the gun, 1.3 spray tip. It puts on a much smoother coat than the HVLP Devillbus gun I used on the guitars (also 1.3 tip). The shading for the sunbursting was done with a touchup sized HVLP gun, 1.0 tip, 40/18 lbs. pressure, material flow turned way down. Don't ask to see it, several more coats of clear to go and 10 days of drying before level sanding and buff out. Then I'll know if it looks good enough.
