Springsteen's Got Soul !

Feels novelty to me. Not really feeling it. The bands are really good though.

It's kind of funny how after a point in someone's career they really can't win. If you put out your 50th rock album people complain that you keep doing the same thing, and if you go in a different direction it's a novelty.

The guy has all the money in the world and could coast for the rest of his days by playing the same 25 hits every night. I like that he keeps experimenting, trying different sounds and bands and styles.

I've seen him live 3 times (once solo, twice with the E-Street Band) and every show was spectacular.

Had a girlfriend from New Jersey when I was young. She (and her brother who I disliked) were huge Bruce fans. Me being a west coaster, I felt it was my obligation to stick it to them a bit about it. Later, another girlfriend ( later to be wife) was a huge 80’s British pop fan. Being a fan of punk and rebellious rock, I hated all things British pop. I can say the same of the Eagles, Elton John, and a number of other artists, for one reason or another I just disliked them out of the gate. It’s only in the past 10 years or so that I’ve looked at some of the music and artists I’ve disliked and said, you know, I was wrong, some of the stuff was pretty good, great even. Still don’t like the Eagles though. And even though I’m over 60, I’d rather listen to someone young doing something new rather than hear someone old doing something…old. Sorry Bruce. And I’m in a cover band so please sniff out the hypocrisy!

So, Bruce Springsteen has announced a new release, a collection of soul classic covers.
To date he's released 2 videos, and I gotta say, I'm impressed.
I'm a little bit disappointed he didn't use the E Street Band, who I'm certain could've handled this music pretty well, but the people he's got do a very fine job.

I know there's a lot of dislike and disdain for The Boss on here, something I've never understood. Personally, I'm a fan, even though I'll admit he's made some choices I disagree with (and please, if you feel moved to comment, let's keep this on the music, eh? I'm well aware of the divisive nature of US politics, and even more aware that dragging that into the thread won't end well.)

Anyways, here's the 2 videos... have a listen and see what ya think.
Naturally, as a bassplayer, I've paid especial attention to the bass parts, and they sure don't disappoint.

So cool! I pre-ordered it when I got the email announcement. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been a fan forever and like you, don’t get a lot of the negativity.

Maybe novelty, but even Metallica played with an orchestra. Music is music. Lots of people love Priest's version of "Diamonds and Rust" better than the original. Same with "Green Manalishi". Different strokes...
It was actually Nazareth who did Diamonds and Rust metal style first :) But those were good versions that brought something new.

Stick to what you do best. Write new material with an R&B flavor if you want to. I like some of his work.

There’s nobody better at doing Springsteen music than Springsteen. Without a doubt. Doesn’t mean I’m going to like every single song he puts out or writes.

Oopsie, my apologies. I could have sworn Nazareth did it before Judas Priest, and Nazareth didn’t do it. Instead, they chose This Flight Tonight by Joni Mitchell as their folkmetal song. I knew they did a folkmetal song, though.

Funny, we were just discussing the Dunning-Krueger effect in another thread.
I guess, when you get to a certain point in your career and a certain point of success, you just assume you're good at anything and can do anything. And it helps having a huge fan base that will applaud everything you do, even if it's not good.
Sorry, I don't think he did these songs justice.
Not bad for a 73 yr old, raspy voice white guy, though.
