I'm thinking of getting a 5-string for "noodling around" @ home, so I don't want to spend a lot of $.

I don't expect a $200 bass to be great, but the Squier Affinity Jazz V seems to get rave reviews. Are these rave reviews heavily biased by the low cost, or is this really a pretty decent bass?

Never regretted buying this bass, and decided that it will stay as my main axe at least in the mid term.

To put it in a perspective: I used to own a G&L L-2500, but had to sell it due to financial troubles. Tone-wise, the Affinity is a downgrade, but not *that* much of a downgrade for the vast price difference. And its bridge tone is IMHO to die for. As far as playability goes, my Affinity wins pretty confidently against that particular L-2500. Currently I can afford a more expensive bass, just can't see the need for it.

I say the Affinity Jazz V is really, really good for the $$. If you A/B it with a MIA Fender Jazz Standard, you will hear a difference in tone, and the finish will certainly look less expensive, but the Affinity sounds like a good Jazz, is solid, takes a good set up (the action can get stupid low if you shim the neck) and is very easy to upgrade through mods.

I just purchased one of these 6 months ago and it is hands-down one of the best basses I ever played in my 38 years of playing bass. I even like this better than my 1978 Rickenbacker 4001 and any Fenders that I played in various music stores. If it was fretless, I would only need to ever take one instrument to any gig, and leave my current fretless at home. I do not plan to modify this in any way, as it was great out of the box other than some minor adjustments.

I bought a used Affinity Jazz-V that was scandalously underpriced, especially given the double-decker surprise of it's barely-touched condition AND the quality of the fit & finish. I would've kept it completely stock, but I had a parts-bass project itch I had to scratch, thus…
