Hi, Bassman1905 here. I'm new to the forums, so if you would give me a kind welcome that would be great :D. I've already learned that some people get pretty angry pretty quick on here :hmm: Anyways, back to the subject.

Okay, first things first, this is only my second year of playing bass. I'm just OKAY. I'm intermediate/advanced begginer. I'm a picker, because I was originally a guitarist (and I still am) and I like punk/metal/rock. It's just my style.

As for gear, I have a Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazz Bass. I LOVE it. It's great, but I can never stop with just one instrument. I need MORE. One thing I've always wanted was a P bass. I immediatly think cheap affinity Squier modding project. :smug:

My plan is to buy a Squier Affinity P bass and:
Change the pickup to a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder PUP
Cover in stickers :bassist:
Change the strings (well duh)
Add bridge cover (like Squier CV 60s P Bass)

...and allow the whole thing to relic over time. I want this project to start around Christmas. It's going to be a real punk-looking bass after its done.

Now...the question is....do the mod....or just buy a Squier Classic Vibe 60's P Bass??? Which one???

Please recommend more mods that I could do.

Thank you for looking at this topic!!!

Well remember, a bass finished in poly paint will not relic like the basses you are going for. It will just get paint chunks and dents in it. :atoz:

And why an Affinity? I say go for a Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified. :bassist:

How about a new bridge? The stock Squier, and Fender in general, are garbage, IMO.

Well....that rises some issues. I could relic the body while modding, but that takes the fun out of it. :( I want something that I can take onstage and slide across the floor and kick it and crap. :p

Remember, PUNK, baby, PUNK!!! I was inspired by this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mhoman/2369122396/

Sweet bass. Maybe I'll even paint random stuff on it 2.

Wait a sec....are you mental? Buy an $300 squier just to mod it and let it relic?? Why not a $170 one?

300 dollars is alot for me.

:bawl:

get something used way cheaper and hey it will have a little wear already

the most punk looking squier is the black white squier VM drop 1/4 pounds in it , a gotoh 201 and yea man your good. Maybe an sx p bass? there better than an affinity and cheaper.

You cant base a bass on price:)

Really 100$ for the SX and 200$ for the affinity is a no brainer and your changing the pick ups and bridge

with the sx ,pickups and bridge 200$+SH
Squier, pickups and bridge 300$+

affinitys are thinner bodies usually neck heavy

I wouldn't waste any time or money on modding an Affinity series P bass. I have one and did the modding thing and it did not improve how cheap it felt. It looks awesome and sounds fine (I have the SD Quarter Pound that you describe but the pots are scratchy and I've got a grounding problem). The neck still feels chunky and cheap. I hate to say it but the $100 Squier with $200 worth of mods still feels and sounds pretty much like a $100 Squier.

I suppose replacing the neck would be a great improvement, albeit as costly as the instrument itself. That would have the advantage of getting to pick a cool neck with blocks and binding, but then you'd have to do the work of transferring over the hardware.

I voted for getting the CV Precision because I have a CV Jazz and it is darn impressive. If the P basses are even close in quality, it is well worth spending the extra money to get a much nicer bass.

That is only my experience. You probably won't be upset with either option and modding is a fun experience; however, comparing the bass to your Classic Vibe 60s Jazz, I believe that there is a high chance of you experiencing disappointment sometime down the road. That's why I'd stick with the CV P bass.

Good luck, regardless of your choice! And welcome to TalkBass! :D
